Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council

Community Assessment

The 2009 Community Assessment is going on now.  We are asking the community what the issues are, what is needed, what is working, and what would have the most impact for services in the community. Results will be posted to our website and available to residents, organizations, and cities.

FAQs about the Community Assessment

How do Community Assessments affect the community?
  • Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council uses findings to guide our research, planning and coordination of networks so that our work makes a difference in the lives of Northwest Hennepin residents.
  •  In response to past Community Assessments, we have created networks and workgroups to create transportation plans, more affordable housing, early childhood education, and culturally appropriate services.
  • Also in response to Community Assessments, we have brought needed services to the region by starting new programs or community organizations such as Senior Centers, Head Start for Northwest Hennepin and the Runaway Youth Initiative (currently YMCA’s POINT Northwest).
  • We also disseminate a report to our member cities, partners and Hennepin County for use in their planning. This report also is used by community organizations in their strategic planning and to demonstrate the need for funding their services in the Northwest Hennepin region.
Are Community Assessments new to Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council?

We have been completing Community Assessments every 3-4 years since we began more than 35 years ago. It began as a phone survey, then moved toward focus group methodology. The most recent community assessment shifted to a strengths-based perspective, seeking to identify not only gaps but also successes of area organizations providing human services.
